Here's one of the many things I now know about opera, thanks to hanging out a few nights with Tim Page, The Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning classical music critic: "O sole mio" is a 19th-century Neapolitan song, and isn't found in any opera at all.

Christopher Petruccelli brought tears to Lillian Dermer's eyes yesterday at The Mall in Columbia.
Mr. Petruccelli won the ninth annual Bel Canto Opera Competition with his renditions of "Una furtiva lagrima" from the opera "L'Elisir," and "Che gelida manina" from "La Boheme."

As for the tenor, Christopher Petruccelli was stellar....4 stars! He sang
High C every which way...piano...forte...staccato....and then there were
the 2 D flats and 3 D naturals. His heroic voice to me at first did not
seem right, but he threw himself into the role with such bravado that I
became a estactic! Wow, I never heard anything like it...
